There are many ways to approach abrasive blasting. Naming conventions for the blasting process depend on the blasting method, used media, and application. Here are a few examples:
Bead blasting requires glass beads. The bead blasting process is often used for cleaning or deburring metal objects. Paint, rust, and debris are removed from the material without damaging it to leave a bright and softly dimpled surface finish. If you want a smooth surface, it’s best to use the smallest beads possible.
Spherical steel shot produces a peening effect that adds compressive strength to the sandblasted metal. This blasting method requires high pressure and can be performed inside a small cabinet or blast room.
Wet blasting is one of the oldest blasting techniques. Invented in the 1950s, wet blasting originally involved silica sand, a material that unfortunately caused people to develop silicosis, a respiratory disease. Silica sand is no longer used, but wet blasting is still a helpful blasting method. Wet blasting is a good option if you want a consistent finish and a smooth surface without producing dust.
